Healing the Whole

The World Health Organisation definition of health is a state of physical, emotional and psychological well-being. We must treat more than just the disease, we must treat the whole human being.

Our philosophy is based on:

  • Recognition of each individual as a whole human being - physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual, and a belief that healing takes place on many levels.
  • The belief in the need for a balanced approach to health care and the right of the individual to have access to psycho-social support in dealing with illness.
  • Recognition of the experience of cancer as trauma and acknowledgement of this, with appropriate care available to patients, families and carers.
  • Recognition of the value of support group therapy as a powerful tool for healing.
Life Force Foundation Aims
  • To provide emotional and social support for people dealing with the whole experience of cancer, encouraging expression of feelings in a safe and caring environment.
  • To develop personal skills and strategies for coping with the associated stress and anxiety of the condition and treatment, restoring confidence and enhancing quality of life.
  • To assist patients to gain the maximum benefit from their treatment regimens, by promoting communication and co-operation between patients and health care providers.

About the logo

In American Indian symbolism, the bear represents courage, strength, protection and life and this is what Life Force supports people to find within themselves.

The Bear itself, the symbol, represents powerful medicine...it is a female symbol which emphasises our 'feelings'. This is what the groups attempt to deal with.

The female bear herself is a very powerful mother influence in relation to her cubs. She protects and teaches them intensively for the first 6 months of their life, that is during a vulnerable time and this appealed to the founders of LifeForce as a huge strength of protection when people were vulnerable after receiving diagnosis, awaiting or starting their treatment.

The bear also relates to the 'Teddy Bear' which we all relate to as a comforter. Within the confines of the group there are teddy bears present to give comfort and soften the sometimes difficult emotional journeys.

The medicine bundles underneath the bear relate to our own personal power and strength...our own powers and resources which can be accessed at any time...feather is hope...the bundle is trust and the eagle's claw is power...these are available for us to draw on in times of adversity...and 'she' overseers this with love and strength...she is encircled as well...alluding to the wholeness, the totality of her protection...

We have no affiliation with any religion, but to be able to access the life force within us, it is fundamental to encourage a belief in something more while respecting each person's interpretation of what that might be.  'Something more' has to have meaning for the individual and could be a specific religious belief or simply choosing to fully live each day the best of our ability.
